In the Polar Regions, the weather is unpredictable and often very volatile. Temperatures are generally cold, although perhaps not as cold as you might expect.

Antarctica

During the austral summer, temperatures on the Antarctic Peninsula range from -5 °C (23 °F) to +5 °C (41 °F), while in the Ross Sea it can be much colder with temperatures as low as -20 °C (-4 °F). While it can be sunny, expect rain, snow, fog and high winds that lower wind chill.

Arctic

Generally speaking, temperatures can be said to roughly range between 10 °C (50 °F) and 0 °C (32 °F). You will only experience colder weather during autumn and winter travel, but you will be able to appreciate the majestic Aurora Borealis.

It depends very much on the person and their tendency to motion sickness. If you feel you are particularly susceptible to motion sickness, it is a good idea to talk to your doctor.

In Antarctica, you will have to cross the Drake Passage which is famous for its stormy waters with waves that can reach over ten meters. That said, not all Drake crossings are the same, and occasionally it can be calm as a lake.

In the Arctic, calm sailing is experienced due to most trips staying closer to shore, so you may not need medication. However, some trips may sail offshore between the Arctic islands and get into rough seas, until you reach more protected areas where you won’t feel any heavy swells.

Onboard chefs can accommodate most dietary restrictions, but you must indicate your needs as far in advance as possible.

There is always one vegetarian dish available per meal, and the chefs will make reasonable efforts to accommodate your preference. As far as vegan food is concerned, it is not possible to offer these dishes on our smaller sailing ships, Rembrandt and Noorderlicht.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to prepare kosher food.

You need to be in good general health and be able to walk reasonable distances self-sufficiently to get the most out of your trip.

On each excursion, you must be able to walk up and down the steep gangway from the ship to the water level to board the Zodiacs. The staff will then assist you in and out of the Zodiacs for your safety.

On land it can be slippery and rocky, however, if you have trouble walking on uneven ground, you can enjoy the scenery closer to shore.

It is important to remember that you are travelling to remote areas without access to sophisticated medical facilities, so you should not join these expeditions if you have a life-threatening condition or need daily medical treatment. If you have any physical limitations, you should inform us before confirming your trip so that we can assess your situation. In addition, you will need to complete a medical form (this information is essential and will be kept strictly confidential).

For women who become pregnant at the time of travel, the cruise company reserves the right to deny or limit participation without compensation if all or part of any health-related information is omitted. Onboard infirmaries are not equipped to handle pregnancies, and the operating areas are almost always far away from any hospital.

Generally, children must be at least 12 years old, although some ships accept children between the ages of 7-11 with additional screening and pre-approval before booking. Parents are responsible for their minor children at all times, both ashore and onboard, and must always stay with the group and follow staff instructions. None of the ships has facilities or games for children, nor does the infirmary have medication for minors. Adventure activities are offered to people over 16, and children under 18 are not allowed to be in a cabin without adult supervision.

Many passengers travel alone, so it is possible to share selected cabins with someone of the same gender to save on a single supplement.

If you prefer to have your own cabin, you can book the single supplement which varies from 50% to 100% more than the shared cabin price, depending on the operator.

For any polar expedition, travel insurance covering medical evacuation and repatriation is mandatory. Most cruise companies require insurance to cover expenses between US$150,000 and US$200,000. Once you have selected your trip, we will tell you specifically what type of insurance you need. Additionally, it is highly recommended that you have a cancellation insurance to ensure that you will be covered financially if you are forced to cancel your trip due to circumstances beyond your control.

An experienced travel agent can offer you many, many choices of ships and itineraries from different operators, whereas a cruise company will only be able to offer you a maximum of three or four ships operated by them.
